Working as a virtual assistant is one of the best alternatives to a nine-to-five job. It simply provides you with a degree of freedom unbeknownst to those working in eight-hour office environs; you can basically work at any time you prefer, and at any place that you are comfortable in, provided that you are able to get yourself connected to the Internet.
Virtual assistance has its own share of ups and downs, of course, and it\’s far from becoming the perfect home-based job. However, that does not stop many professionals from taking up this trade, simply because the benefits appear to be worth the cost. For those willing to embrace this way of life, though, there are a few things that they need to have before starting out, and as such, curious questions about the path that awaits them are in order. Here are the most common ones, and here are our basic answers:
How should you dress up?
As a VA, you are entitled to go to work wearing pretty much anything that you are comfortable in. You can be in the same clothes you wore the other day and still get the job done (NOTE: This is not recommended as it is not hygienic), or you can go wild with your get up. In any case, feel free! However, take note that there are clients that will request your virtual presence and will ask you for quick video chat sessions. Of course, you will need to look presentable in that matter. Our recommendations in such cases? Look clean and decent at the very least, or go all out and sport the white collar look, suit, ties, and all.
What should you have at hand?
Obviously, the primary thing that you should have is a computer and a decent Internet connection—those two come hand in hand and should not be treated otherwise. Laptops are best for virtual assistants, as it would allow for a greater degree of freedom. You may also want to have snacks and coffee to keep you going throughout the day. Do be sure, however, to minimize if not eliminate distractions. Keep your hands away from your phone unless absolutely necessary, and you definitely won\’t need your other mobile gadgets; lock them up and get that four-hour work done.
Where should you work?
Place is not an issue for any VA, although there is one limiting factor that one should consider before setting up shop: the Internet connection. Regardless of the work your client gave you, you will need to be constantly online so as to allow for smooth communications and coordination. That said, if you prefer working away from home, be sure to pick a spot where you can hook up to a decent Internet connection. Many establishments—particularly restaurants and cafés—offer free WiFi connection to patrons, so you have plenty of options in this matter.
Who should you work for?
One can argue that, in this case, the proper term should be “work with.” Regardless of your semantic preference, fact is that there are many opportunities for one to find employment online as a virtual assistant. However, not all can help one grow in their profession, much less bring actual work satisfaction. That said, when looking for work as a virtual assistant, be sure to find those that can help you grow professionally and you think is fun to work with, although you should definitely limit your options to just these. One thing to consider are your specialties and interests. If your job is in tune with your interests and in line with the skills that you wish to specialize in, it will be easy for you to find growth and happiness in your work.
