One of the many, many jobs virtual assistants are given is to write something. It may be a newsletter, a blog, or maybe just some sort of statement to be posted on the client\’s home page. Writing is no easy task, for certain, and there are times when one can\’t help but find themselves somehow unable to get something typed down. Writers unaffectionately call this writer\’s block, and this is one of the many struggles they need to overcome from time to time.
There are many reasons as to why one runs into a writer\’s block. It could be that they just find themselves unable to get their piece right, unable to put their ideas to writing, or simply because they are not in the mood. Regardless, one can definitely overcome writer\’s block. While there is no real solution to getting through this problem, here are a few ideas that will definitely help.
- Take a break. You can go out for a walk for a few minutes, get something to eat, or simply rest up for a bit. Be sure not to take too long, though, nor should you resume writing only when you think you feel inspired.
- No more distractions. Close your social media tabs, disconnect from the Internet, turn off your TV, put your phone in your pocket, close your windows, close the door, etc. If there\’s something that could distract you, keep them off your reach and out of sight.
- Exercise a bit. You can simply stretch out, go out and walk, or go all out with a five-minute workout. Exercise can get your blood flowing and can bring out some energy that can help you think clearly and get your mind buzzing with ideas.
- Work somewhere else. A change in environment can help refresh your mind and dissociate yourself from the place where you have encountered that dreaded writer\’s block.
- Play some tunes. Fill the room with music to stimulate your mind. We recommend against songs or anything with any semblance of lyrics, though, as the words can easily invade your thoughts and impair your work.
- Stimulants may help. Make some tea, bring out those chocolates, or brew some coffee. For most people, a little stimulant is a great way to get the brain working.
- Play with ideas. Pick a word and work your way from there, or you can put a creative spin on old topics.
- Just start writing. Really, the best way to break through the writer\’s block is to, well, just write. Write any sentence to start your piece. Indeed, just write anything, and the ideas will start flowing.
There is not a single silver-bullet solution to writer\’s block. The key, however, is to not allow yourself to be paralyzed by the block, and instead work your way towards stimulating your mind and generating ideas, and, most importantly, motivating yourself to simply write.
